IT load to cooling tons

Convert critical IT load to tons of refrigeration and see how many units you need at N or N+1.

Lighting, UPS/PDU losses, envelope gains. Use 0 for IT load only.

How it works

One ton of refrigeration removes 12,000 BTU per hour, or 3.51685 kW of heat. Required tons equal the total heat load in kW divided by 3.51685. Add a percentage for heat from lighting, UPS and PDU losses, and the building envelope if you want to include them.

N is the number of units needed to carry the load. N+1 adds one unit so the system can lose any single unit and still meet the load.

This is a planning estimate, not a design. Real sizing depends on climate, supply temperatures, part-load behavior, and your redundancy standard. Talk to an engineer for a site-specific model.
